R. K. Mellon Elementary School

Welcome to R. K. Mellon Elementary School in the Ligonier Valley School District.  We are located at the end of Bell Street behind the Ligonier Valley Middle School. We invite parents to visit the school and learn more about our programs and events.  Your child’s educational journey is a partnership between us, and we’re excited to work together to support their growth and development.

We offer a range of programs and activities designed to spark curiosity, encourage creativity, and build essential skills.

Here are a few highlights about our school:

1. Dedicated and Caring Educators: Our highly qualified teachers are passionate about fostering a love for learning in every student. They employ innovative teaching strategies to engage young minds and tailor instruction to meet individual needs.
2. Rigorous Academic Programs: We offer a well-rounded curriculum that encompasses core subjects such as language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Additionally, we provide opportunities for specials in art, music, physical education, library, computers and STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Math) allowing students to explore their interests and possible passions of their future.
3. Parental Engagement: We strongly believe that a child's education is a collaborative effort between school and home. We encourage active parental involvement through various channels, such as parent-teacher conferences, volunteer opportunities, sitting with your child(ren) each evening to discuss their school day and joining the Parent Teacher Organization - PTO. Our PTO, is a very friendly organization that collaborates with the school and teachers to help support our goals.

This year, R.K. Mellon will implement a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework to ensure every student receives the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support they need to be successful.

The MTSS framework provides students with academic and behavioral support through multiple tiers of intervention and enrichment. Using data to guide decision-making, MTSS emphasizes early identification and support to address student needs while also providing enrichment opportunities. This proactive approach helps ensure that every child receives the appropriate level of instruction and support to maximize their growth and achievement.

R.K. Mellon will also implement a school-wide PBIS framework to promote a positive, safe, and respectful learning environment. PBIS teaches students clear behavioral expectations through consistent instruction and reinforcement. Our expectations are centered around our RAMS Promise:

• Make Honest Choices
• Show Cooperation

Throughout the school year, students will receive lessons that teach and reinforce these expectations in all school settings. Students who demonstrate the RAMS Promise will have opportunities to be recognized and celebrated for making positive choices. By implementing MTSS and PBIS together, we are committed to creating a supportive school culture where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Please mark your calendars for our upcoming K4/K Orientations (Aug. 20, 5:30-6:30pm) or Open House (Sept. 16, 5:30-7:00pm) where you will have the opportunity to meet our dedicated staff, tour the school and learn more about our programs. Additional details will be provided closer to the event. **Please note that if your student is in K4 or Kindergarten, the orientation will serve as your open house.
