School Closure Information Spring 2020

The health and safety of our learners and staff are our top priorities.  We continue to monitor the local and national developments regarding the COVID-19 virus and have made preparations to respond to how the virus may impact our community.  This page will continue to be updated daily to reflect the most current information available.
If you have specific questions about your child's health or the health of a family member, you should contact your family's healthcare provider.

Grading - Evaluation of Learner Progress

We know that the current learning environment is one that most learners would likely not select for themselves, and are aware of the anxiety that many are facing as a result of COVID 19.  In hopes of reducing anxiety related to the pandemic, as well as with the lack of comfort in navigating remote learning,  Ligonier Valley School District Board of Education acted on administrative recommendations to either temporarily suspend, or revise policies for the 2019-20 school year, at its April 14, 2020 meeting.

Probably the most impactful change is the elimination of letter grades for Ligonier Valley Middle School and Ligonier Valley High School learners for the final quarter of the 2019-20 school year.  Performance for this period of time will be revised to a Pass/Incomplete system.  While LVMS and LVHS will utilize Pass/Incomplete reporting for grades 6-12, K4-5 and grade 6 ELA and math will continue with standard-based reporting, as they have throughout the school year.

For purposes of LVHS GPA and Class Rank, a P = 4.0.  You will see the calculation on attached 214 AP.  In addition, final grades for secondary learners will be calculated using a P = 100%, and weighted courses will receive the same consideration as in the percentage-based system.  Learners who receive an “Incomplete” in any course, will have the opportunity to submit missing assignments, or demonstrate mastery of learning outcomes, at a later date.

We encourage our learners to maintain some regularity in completing course requirements during the current school closure, and to not procrastinate in their learning.  An “Incomplete” will not be regarded as a failure, but will come with the expectation that learners eventually demonstrate mastery of related learning outcomes to receive credit for current coursework.  At the current time, we are anticipating extended learning opportunities into summer.  This discussion is in the very early stages, and is partially dependent upon federal stimulus funds that we are to receive.  More information will be provided as plans continue to evolve.
