Student Assistance Program (SAP)

What is SAP?

The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is a team of specially trained school professionals who help students overcome barriers that may interfere with their success in school.

The SAP team includes counselors, teachers, administrators, and other trained school personnel who work together to identify concerns and connect students and families with appropriate supports and resources.

SAP is designed to help students experiencing academic, behavioral, emotional, social, or health-related challenges.

Signs That a Student May Need Support

You may wish to contact the SAP Team if you notice concerns such as:
  • Withdrawal from family, friends, or school activities
  • Significant changes in friendships or social groups
  • Sudden decline in grades or academic performance
  • Frequent absences or school avoidance
  • Increased aggression, anger, or behavioral concerns
  • Defiance at home or school
  • Changes in mood or personality
  • Persistent sadness or signs of depression
  • Talking about self-harm or suicide
  • Unexplained injuries
  • Concerns related to alcohol or drug use
  • Difficulty coping with stress or anxiety

Has Your Child Experienced a Significant Life Event?

Students sometimes need additional support when experiencing:
  • Death of a loved one
  • Divorce or family changes
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Trauma
  • Medical concerns
  • Family stressors
  • Other significant life events

The SAP Team can help connect families with available school and community resources.

How Does a Student Become Involved in SAP?

Anyone can make a referral to the Student Assistance Program, including:
  • Parents or guardians
  • Students
  • Teachers
  • Administrators
  • School staff
  • Friends or family members

A referral simply lets the SAP Team know that someone has concerns and would like support for a student.

Once a referral is received, the SAP Team reviews the concern and determines appropriate next steps. Parents are informed and involved throughout the process.

The SAP Team does not diagnose, treat, or provide therapy. Instead, the team works collaboratively with families to identify concerns, provide information, and connect students with available school and community resources.

Our goal is to remove barriers to learning and help students achieve success in school.
